WHAT DO YOU HAVE FAITH IN?

SYNOPSIS: This is short conversation between two people, one a Christian and one a non-Christian. They know each other well enough to speak their minds freely. The conversation explains why each came to his beliefs. No names were used to allow either gender to play the parts.

CHARACTERS

NON-CHRISTIAN: Over 18-years-old, has not thought things through.

CHRISTIAN: Over 30-years-old, well established in his Christian faith. Not afraid to
tackle hard subjects. Applies his faith to everyday life.

SETTING: Modern day. Indoors.

PROPS: A wooden chair.

SCENE 1
NON-CHRISTIAN: You believe in God? Why?

CHRISTIAN: Because He loves us enough to design the world to be perfect for mankind.

NON-CHRISTIAN: Creation is really just a coincidence. I think evolution explains it all.

CHRISTIAN: I believe in God. You believe in evolution.

NON-CHRISTIAN: You believe in some being you can’t hear, see, or touch. At least evolution is logical. It is based on facts.

CHRISTIAN: What have you experienced from evolution that makes you have faith in it?

NON-CHRISTIAN: Experienced?

CHRISTIAN: I know how to explain it. Here’s a chair. Sit in it.

NON-CHRISTIAN: (Sits in chair.) Now what?

CHRISTIAN: Weren’t you worried it would break under you?

NON-CHRISTIAN: No. I’ve sat in it before.

CHRISTIAN: You knew from experience that the chair was solid. You had faith that the chair would hold you up. What experience have you had with evolution to make you believe in it?

NON-CHRISTIAN: Well, I— . . . . I tried believing in God once.  I didn’t hear him speak to me. He didn’t give me what I asked for.  I couldn’t tell He was there. Seemed like a waste of time.

CHRISTIAN: That’s not true for me. I find, every morning when I praise and worship God, the day goes better. That experience makes me have faith in God that He will make the next day go just as good. When God answers my prayer, it is not always as I expect, but it makes me want to ask for more.

NON-CHRISTIAN: I asked God for a new car and He wouldn’t even let me have a loan for one. I tried to believe stronger, but that didn’t work. I didn’t get an answer, so I gave up on God.

CHRISTIAN: I don’t always get what I pray for either. I have found that I have to mix obedience with faith. They’re virtually inseparable, you know.

NON-CHRISTIAN: Obey what? Faith in what?

CHRISTIAN: The Bible of course. Like I said, when I praise God in the morning, the day goes better. A better day gives me faith. In turn, it makes me want to obey more, which in turn makes it easier to believe for the next time.

NON-CHRISTIAN: I don’t see it. How can you believe in a God that you can’t hear, see, or touch?

CHRISTIAN: If you were in a car wreck and lost all your senses, but could still think, what would you have? Would evolution do you any good then?

NON-CHRISTIAN: Not much, I guess. . . . I guess I would want to be dead.

CHRISTIAN: If it happened to me, I would still believe in God because Jesus, His Son, would still be present with me and has promised to take me to my eternal home in heaven.
